Courses
Data in the social and applied sciences are often "nested" or "clustered", with a multilevel structure. For example, jurors are nested within juries, students are nested within classrooms, and repeated measures are nested within persons. This course provides an introduction to the use of multilevel models that take into account such nesting or clustering among observations. Students will learn the basic concepts of multilevel modeling and have the opportunity to apply appropriate analytic techniques to multilevel data in a class project and homework assignments.

Behavioral Medicine (3-0) Behavioral medicine and clinical health psychology are multi- and inter- disciplinary fields in which multiple related professions integrate to promote emotional and physical health and well being. This course will introduce students to key elements of the field, including its research and practice. Foci will include: theoretical models, assessment, differential medical and psychological diagnosis, intervention, and ethics among others. Assignments and class exercises are designed to provide students knowledge and specific tools to collaborate with other professionals, both clinically and for the purposes of research. Behav/Mental Hlth Intervention This course teaches students to apply evidence-based practices in mental health care, criminal justice, academic and public health settings. Students at the Master's and PhD level will lern to integrate evidence-based interventions into practice and research, and to adapt these interventions to the setting and target populations with which they work. Readings regarding evidence-based practice will be discussed in class, and concepts will be applied to behavioral health and mental problems in the community based on the student's interests and professional goals.

This course teaches students to write for publication or to obtain funding by guiding them through the completion of at least one professional-level manuscript or research proposal. Depending on the particular semester, students may develop a manuscript for journal submission; a thesis or dissertation proposal/document; or a proposal for research or research training. Students are required to write daily, submit work weekly for instructor and peer review, participate in review of other's work, and complete reading assignments. Potential students must meet with the instructor before enrolling to discuss their writing topic.

Advanced study of the most current information related to neurochemical and neuropsychological mechanisms by which the nervous system controls behavior. In this course students will explore, in depth, life-span development with a focus on cognition and mental processes.
