M.Ed. - Educational Administration

Students who wish to pursue graduate study directed toward developing leadership knowledge and skills can pursue a master’s in Educational Administration with focus on: (A) K-12 School Administration or (B) Higher Education Leadership.
Admission Requirements
The admission factors will be reviewed holistically to assess the potential of the applicant. The successful applicant would typically have an undergraduate upper-division GPA of 3.0 or higher that demonstrates focus on academics, twelve hours of undergraduate coursework in professional education that demonstrates basic knowledge in this area of study, and a written statement that demonstrates maturity and commitment to Education.
Students seeking admission to the M.Ed. in Educational Administration must complete the following prior to the semester in which they first plan to enroll.
- Unconditional admission into the M.Ed. in Educational Administration degree programs requires the following:
- Application for admission to the Graduate School;
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;
- Attainment of an undergraduate cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.00; or
- Attainment of an undergraduate GPA of no less than 3.00 in all upper-division undergraduate coursework;
- Evidence of successful completion of at least 12 semester hours of coursework in upper-division undergraduate coursework in professional education;
- A written statement by the applicant describing personal and professional goals as related to the focus of the M.Ed. in Educational Administration; and
- A curriculum vitae/resume.

- Conditional admission can be granted to applicants who have been denied unconditional admission to the program. The Admissions Review Committee of each program will consider and make recommendations to admit applicants conditionally. Terms of any conditional admittance will be determined on an individual basis, and will be specified in writing to the Graduate School and to the applicant.
Focus on K-12 Administration
The 36-credit hour Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program in Educational Administration with emphasis on K-12 Administration is designed to meet the needs of students seeking to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to becoming effective K-12 educational leaders. The program requires completion of a set of Foundation courses, General Administration courses, and Specialized Preparation courses.
Students enrolled in the M.Ed. program can also seek admission into the Principal Preparation Program, which culminates with principal certification in the state of Texas. (See section on Principal Certification.)

Administrative Internships
An eligible student with less than a year of documented administrative experience in higher education is required to complete two semesters of an administrative internship in order to gain some experience in higher education leadership. The internship should be at a site that will advance the student's professional interests. The site can be at a student's current place of employment. However, the student must take on assignments that are not associated with the student's current position. The internship should take place at one site; however, the student's advisor may approve two internships at two sites. The internship must include a minimum of five goals to be accomplished by the student. The internship goals must be detailed in a contract agreed upon by the student, advisor, and site supervisor. In addition, accomplishing the goals of the internship, the student must at minimum, meet or communicate with his or her advisor midway of each semester to report on the progress of the internship and for the advisor to provide appropriate assistance if necessary. Midway through each semester, the advisor will either meet or communicate with the site advisor to obtain his or her perception of the student's progress and performance. Contracts may be amended with the approval of the three parties; however no contract may be amended past each half of a semester. Prior to the end of each semester, each student is required to submit a portfolio that documents the accomplishments of the internship. The portfolio must also include a typed reflective journal of the student's experience during the internship which also addresses the extent to which the student's coursework assisted with internship. The reflective journal will not be shared with the site supervisor.
Research Apprenticeships
An eligible student who has a year or more of documented administrative experience in higher education and has less than one year of documented research experience is required to complete two semesters of a research apprenticeship in order to gain additional research experience at the graduate level. The apprenticeship should be for one research project, the student's advisor may approve two apprenticeships. The apprenticeship must include a minimum of five goals to be accomplished by the student. The apprenticeship goals must be detailed in a contract agreed upon by the student and the advisor. In addition, to accomplish the goals of the apprenticeship, the student must at minimum, meet of communicate with his or her advisor midway of each semester to report the progress of the approval of the advisor and the student; however, no contract may be amended past each half of a semester. The advisor and the student will agree on the end product of each apprenticeship.
