This course provides the historical, social, cognitive, and critical foundations of learning theory with an emphasis on literacy instruction for prospective educators and other language and literacy professionals. Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to teach in schools and other educational settings. Special emphasis is placed on literacies of the U.S.-Mexico border and the literacy education of emergent bilingual students (English Language Learners). Fifteen hours of guided field experience is required. Restricted to Majors of IDST.

Foundations of Literacy and Learning: This course provides an overview of the integrated aspects of literacy, with an emphasis of foundational concepts, principles, and practices related to literacy development. The course highlights the linguistic underpinnings of emergent literacy, as well as evidence-based approaches to literacy instruction. Special emphasis is placed on literacy with emergent bilingual students (English Language Learners).

It provides an overview of the integrated aspects of literacy, with an emphasis on foundational concepts, principles, and practices related to literacy development. Students will gain knowledge of the essential elements of literacy instruction and the use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to inform literacy instruction in diverse educational settings. It focuses on the contexts for adult learning and the development of adult literacy programs in diverse educational settings. Teaching Literacy and Language Arts in Elementary Classrooms: This course examines the methods and resources for teaching literacy in the elementary grades. It focuses on the application of learning theories, methods of evaluation and consideration of individual differences, hands-on instructional practices, and knowledge of state and national standards for Language Arts. Students will design, implement, assess and critique literacy instruction, with an emphasis on effectively engaging emergent bilingual students (English Language Learners).
Teaching, Learning, and Assessment of Literacy: This course focuses on the knowledge, strategies, and materials for building specific literacy skills in elementary-aged learners. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, and the use of assessment to inform literacy instruction. This course also covers the identification of reading difficulties and strategies for supporting students with dyslexia and other reading disorders. Students will analyze data from different sources to individualize instruction and to inform grouping practices.

This course explores how new modes of communication in the digital age have transformed the ways in which children and youth engage in reading and writing both inside and outside school. Key topics include: the emergence of "new" literacies; multimodality and meaning-making; media literacy ; digital storytelling; and the integration of digital literacies into K-8, especially middle school, curricula.
