Master of Arts in Teaching Science
This program is not accepting new students and will be phased out effective fall 2023.
The Master of Arts in Teaching Science (MATS) is designed primarily for working teachers, with courses offered evenings and summers. This program provides an opportunity for students interested in teaching middle or high school or entry-level college science courses to earn an advanced degree with a primary emphasis on sciences that will be of value in their classrooms. The program gives students a broad background in graduate content sciences, and in science teaching and learning. Students who are not teachers may enroll concurrently in an Alternative Teacher Certification Program. Teachers may also choose to take additional courses leading to supplemental certification as a Master Science Teacher.
Admission Requirements
Apply to the MAT Science program through UTEP’s Graduate School. The GRE is not required, nor are the letters of recommendation. Minimum GPA required is 2.5. Applicants from countries where English is not the first language are required to demonstrate English proficiency. Please consult the graduate school website for required scores.
Degree Requirements
The degree program has three tracks:
- An in-service track for existing teachers who wish to strengthen in content and gain the mentoring skills;
- An in-service track that requires an additional 12 hours of Science Education courses will prepare them for eventual certification as a Master Science Teacher;
- A pre-service track for students with undergraduate degrees in science or engineering who seek a masters and teacher certification. This track requires an additional 15 credit hours and an internship placement at an area school.
All students must choose a core science content area in which to concentrate: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics. Degree requirements are detailed below.
Tracks

- In-Service Track with Master Science Teacher Certification
- Pre-Service Track
(Requires concurrent enrollment in Alternative Teacher Certification)
